Lack of workplace diversity deters 69% of young people

A lack of diversity would deter 69% of young people (aged between 12 and 25 years old) from working for a particular company, according to research by social enterprise MyKindaCrowd.

How Diverse is the Workforce is based on a survey of young people and teachers. It also reveals 31% of young people said they would not be put off a workplace by its lack of diversity if they were offered their "dream job".

Around three-quarters (77%) of teachers would be more likely to recommend a company that is known for being diverse to their students. Although almost half (49%) of teachers don't believe enough is being done by businesses to ensure students will have a diverse workforce to go into.

Three-quarters (76%) of students and two-thirds (65%) of teachers see changing recruitment methods as the key to introducing more diversity into the workplace.

Young people associate culture most strongly with diversity (80%), followed by race (70%) and gender (56%).

MyKindaCrowd managing director Will Akerman stressed the importance of young people being informed about diversity.

"It is vital that young people are aware of what a diverse workplace is and the skills they can bring to it," he said. "It is great that companies are working on improving diversity and widening the pool of schools and universities they recruit from is a great way to start.”
