Grant Thornton employees go to Kenya and India as part of volunteering programme

Grant Thornton is poised to send a team of volunteers to Kenya to help with community projects.

The company will send a team of six staff to Kenya and two to Jaipur in India during May as part of a volunteering project.

Staff must have been with the firm for four years to be eligible to take part in the scheme and will receive full pay while they are on the trip. It is hoped the project will showcase to other employees the importance of volunteering, remind people they work in a global economy and enable them to meet staff at the firm's partner companies world-wide.

Margaret Bowler, head of corporate social responsibility at Grant Thornton, told HR magazine: "Even in a recession it would be disastrous to cut back on an initiative like this. It makes people see our values, helps them work as part of a team and develops confidence - there are so many advantages to the business."

HR will keep up to date with how the team gets on and publish staff blogs and photographs of the project when the group returns to the UK.
