HR must be resilient in the face of a COVID-winter

​I always mourn the end of summer. As others get excited about woolly jumpers, frosty fingers wrapped around hot drinks and Hocus Pocus, I dread the horizontal rain and dark mornings Autumn offers us.

I try to be optimistic; I take Vitamin D supplements and make sure I’m still getting out and about during the daylight, but I cannot deny my love for sunny days and warmer climates.

That’s why I, like many others, am worried about heading into a potential second lockdown during the colder months.

I fear the novelty factor of spending more time at home has certainly worn off, with excitement around spare time to do more DIY or take up a new hobby replaced with anxiety over future job stability and the health of loved ones. No amount of sourdough or baked banana bread can assuage that.

But continue we must. A large part of the successes and resilience of every organisation throughout this period has been the strength of its HR team.

Without them, businesses would be left scrambling around, desperately trying to figure out how we measure employee wellbeing or what the various government assistance programmes mean without the political fluff.

It is difficult to comprehend what the virus will look like as we head towards the end of the year (and what a year), but I know as the sunlight gets weaker, HR’s determination to take care of its people will become stronger.

We will all have days where all we want to do is shut the curtains, roll up in a blanket and eat a “share pack” bag of chocolate, definitely my hibernation-style of choice. But what’s important is not the hopelessness we feel with the stress of the day job, but instead the fact we get up the next day ready to do it all again.

At least we have The Great British Bake Off.
