According to a survey of 3,000 staff by EDF Energy, 59% do not know about workplace energy efficiency measures and a third would like more guidance from their line manager or HR department.
More than half (55%) claim they do not make any effort to be energy-efficient at work and the main offences are failing to turn off air-conditioning (81%), forgetting to switch off the photocopier (76%), leaving on lights (70%) and not shutting down computers in meeting rooms (84%).
Julie Allen, energy efficiency manager at EDF Energy, said: "The research shows workers have good intentions but are failing to act on them. This is where HR and the management team should step in with some really simple measures to engage employees and set the environmental tone for the business."
The Government hopes to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.
