Remote workers browse pornographic websites more than office-based staff

Staff who work remotely are two and a half times more likely to look at pornography online than their office-based counterparts, new research has discovered.

Web security firm ScanSafe analysed its eight billion web requests in March and found remote workers were much more likely to visit sites with extreme or graphic content.

They were also four times more likely to visit sites that give instructions on bomb making, the survey revealed. And remote workers were found to access illegal downloads 8.5 times more and sites with graphic content 5.2 times more than staff based in offices.

Dan Nadir, vice president of product strategy at ScanSafe, said: "It's no surprise that web browsing habits change when employees are outside of the physical confines of their office and away from the watchful eye of supervisors and colleagues.

"What is surprising is that there is such a huge increase in requests for what most organisations would deem highly offensive sites and in some cases illegal content-including the download of copyrighted material. If your employees are using a corporate-issued laptop to download illegal music files from home, your organisation could be liable."
