They are also more than five times more likely to visit extreme websites that harbour extremely graphic content, the report by web security firm ScanSafe finds. Such workers are also nearly four times as likely to access illegal sites, such as those that contain details on how to make explosives. Conversely, remote workers are less inclined to conduct their internet banking, believing security is tighter from their office.
“It’s no surprise that web habits change when staff are away from the watchful eye of bosses,” says Spencer Parker, director of product development at ScanSafe. “But it is surprising that there is such a huge increase in visits to what most firms would deem highly offensive websites. If employees are using a company laptop to download illegal music files from home, their bosses may be liable, and they could be putting their company at risk.”
