IMI HRD: HR can 'miss the point'


HR risks “missing the point” by focusing on the transactional, according to IMI group HRD Geoff Tranfield.

Tranfield told HR magazine: “My worry with the HR function is we concentrate on that 2%-3% saving on the transactional piece, and in focusing on that you miss the whole point: can you be a key part of making great decisions around people, which is part of making great business decisions? That’s where you really add value.”

He added: “Sometimes I worry that HR focuses too much on our own internal stuff – running a slightly prettier recruitment process – when that isn’t where we should be spending our time.”

Tranfield has been re-engineering HR at IMI, using a lean manufacturing model to free up time and resource to focus on the strategic.
