Iceland's Malcolm Walker and Peter Walls 'most people focused CEOs' at HR Excellence Awards

Iceland CEO and founder Malcolm Walker was named the UK's most people-focused CEO in the private sector at the HR Excellence Awards in London. Peter Walls, CEO of Gentoo Group, claimed the most people-focused CEO in the public and not-for-profit sector.

Walker, who founded Iceland 44 years ago, was part of a nine-person shortlist on the night. He was chosen for the award, sponsored by Penna, over the CEOs of Tate and Holiday Extras, among others.

Walker oversees a workforce of around 25,000 employees, 92% of whom said they were happy to work for the frozen food retailer in a recent survey. The high level of wellbeing among the company's staff, along with the fact pay and conditions are some of the best in the retail sector, contributed to Walker coming away with the prize.

Walls wins public sector award

Housing company Gentoo Group CEO Peter Walls (pictured) won the equivalent award in the public and not-for-profit sector. He was rewarded for an impressive apprenticeship programme and support for the local community.

Gentoo was one of six housing associations in the shortlist for the category, sponsored by Best Companies, highlighting the organisations' impressive focus on employees.

Walls told HR magazine he was "amazed" to win against such strong competition. He also praised his employees for their hard work and efforts.

"I firmly believe the business is only as good as the people within it," he said. "I love seeing young people go the extra mile and inspire me."
