Forestry Commission to reduce staff carbon footprint

The Forestry Commission is to measure every employees carbon footprint.

As a Government department, the Forestry Commission is required to measure and reduce its carbon emissions and is working with business management consultants COA Solutions to measure employees' carbon footprints, and up draw internal credit card reconciliation and fleet management systems.

When staff enter car mileage into the organisation's employee expense management system, it can calculate how much carbon was emitted. The system can also be used for tax, bus, rail and air travel.

The organisation is in the process of identifying the total carbon usage, before implementing measures to reduce emissions.

Steve Atkins, head of finance systems development at the Forestry Commission, said: "It made sense to build a carbon measurement tool into our expense management system because it provides an easy and reliable method of tracking staff transport emissions.

"We now have carbon data at our fingertips, which is crucial if we're to achieve year-on-year greenhouse gas reductions."
