EasyJet targets empty-nesters in new recruitment campaign

Airline EasyJet is targeting over-45s in a new recruitment campaign designed to encourage people to pursue a new career as cabin crew.

EasyJet said the campaign was specifically aimed at empty-nesters, parents seeking a new challenge after their children have left home and are no longer financially dependent on them.

Research from the airline showed a 27% increase in cabin crew aged over 45 since 2018, while 78% of British adults over 45 said they would like to take on a new challenge once their children left home.

Michael Brown, director of cabin services at EasyJet, said the campaign aims to challenge any stereotypes that might exist about working as cabin crew.

Speaking to HR magazine, he said: "This campaign is about challenging stereotypes about the job and showing that being cabin crew can be a job for anyone with the right skills, no matter what their age.

"This is a trend we’ve been seeing for some time and so we wanted to tap into this and encourage more talented people looking for a career change later in life – like parents with older children or empty-nesters – who might be considering a new challenge to bring their wealth of life experience to the industry. 

"With part-time as well as full-time opportunities available, it also means we’re also able to offer a career with flexibility that we know lots of people might not think this career could offer, so we want to raise awareness of this too."

Airline cabin crew was the desired career choice for 26% of parents over the age of 45 surveyed by EasyJet.

The most popular choice was a charity worker (39%), followed by paramedic (29%), teacher (28%) and librarian (27%).

Neil, 59, joined EasyJet's cabin crew in 2019 after a 30-year sales career, following in the footsteps of his daughter Holly. 

He said: “I decided I needed a new challenge and wanted a job I could enjoy and would look forward to work each day. Knowing How much Holly loved the job, and with her encouragement, I applied and found myself in Luton academy for training. I have loved it ever since.”

EasyJet surveyed 2,000 British adults over 45.
