Julie Welch, chief people officer, Carey Group

Julie joined the Carey Group at Executive Board level in the newly created role of Chief People Officer in February 2019 where she is responsible for the creation and delivery of the people strategy for the Group.

The Carey Group is a leading family-owned civil engineering and construction business, operating across the UK and Ireland and founded in 1969. Its companies provide specialist construction services, including asbestos removal, demolition, civil engineering, dry lining and housebuilding together with resource recovery services across multiple sectors.

Prior to Careys, she worked for Bunzl, a FTSE 100 support services company where she was director of group HR with worldwide revenues of over £9 billion and more than 19,000 colleagues globally in 31 countries. She also worked for Wincanton for five and a half years as group HR director, at Royal Mail as HR director for operations and modernisation, and was people director UK and Ireland for brewer AnheuserBusch InBev. Welch developed her HR career at Sainsbury’s where she worked for 13 years holding various HR roles.

Julie attained a degree in English and Social Anthropology from Keele University and a Masters in Human Resource Management from Middlesex University Business School. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Her areas of particular interest in HR are culture, colleague engagement and creating high performance teams.
