Debbie Alder, director general, people and capability, Department for Work and Pensions

?Alder took on the expanded role of director general, people and capability in April 2019

Previously she was director general of HR, having held this role since January 2014. Before joining the civil service she spent 21 years in the private sector in a variety of HR roles in the UK and abroad. These roles were across retail, manufacturing and consultancy.

Alder chairs the Civil Service HR Capability Board. She is a trustee of the Whitehall and Industry Group (WIG), and a steering group member of Movement to Work.

The director general, people and capability, sets and leads the department’s people strategy, aligning this to business strategy and the wider civil service workforce plan. The role is accountable for:

  • the full HR operating model and function
  • health and safety
  • all learning and development
  • workforce resourcing
  • sponsorship of major people transformation programmes
  • creating a flexible, inclusive and continuously learning workforce
