Workplace bullies target appearance

Almost a quarter (23%) of office claim they have been bullied at work because of their dress sense or their weight.

According to celebrity fashion website MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, teachers also suffered from this type of bullying as 21% said colleagues and pupils had made negative comments about their appearance.

Only 7% of the 2,408 employees surveyed said they had made comments about a colleague's appearance - which must mean that either throwaway comments are to blame or bullies will not own up to what they have said.

Casual Fridays were cited as the source of the problem by 68% of respondents and, of those bullied for fashion failures, 19% changed their accessories. Of those bullied for being overweight, 72% said they hated going to work as a result and 70% started a diet.

Women fared worse in the survey with 24% claiming they have been put down by an ‘office bitch' compared with only 7% of men.

Jilly Tovey, head fashionista at MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, said: "We believe within the dress code of employment, individuals should be able to experiment and personalise their clothing to their own wishes and not feel victimised or bullied simply because they have a different fashion sense to the majority.

"To bully somebody because of their appearance is incredibly juvenile. Managers have a direct responsibility to ensure their workforce is happy and should do everything they can to promote a zero-tolerance approach to bullying."
