The age represents about 30,000 hours worked. The average age workers say they feel most ambitious is 31.
However, staff have to wait much longer until they truly feel fulfilled. Of the 2,100 workers polled, average fulfilment came at the age of 50.
The survey also shows 85% of workers do not intend to stop working once they reach retirement age, with a third (33%) wanting to stay on as usual in full-time employment.
The research was commissioned as part of Standard Life's ‘Active Money' campaign, highlighting how baby-boomers are not growing old as earlier generations used to. It follows the firm's Death of Retirement report earlier this year which found over 45-year-olds have greater ambitions for their future than ever before.
