Snow costs employers £318 million in lost productivity

The British economy has lost 51.4 million working hours over the past week as a result of poor weather conditions, according to research published by roadside recovery firm Green Flag.

The research showed more than 8.5 million (18%) of British adults have been unable to work their contracted hours because of the adverse weather, costing employers an estimated £318 million.

The research revealed, due to the snow and icy conditions, 19% of respondents admitted that they were afraid of driving and chose to stay off the road, while a further 2.3 million people tried to take to the roads but were unable to because of the ice.

With the weather affecting driving conditions, the report stated public transport is seen as the safest option of travel according to the findings, with 12% of people taking trains, tubes and buses instead of driving because they felt it was the safer option.

Miranda Schunke, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: "It is not only the roads that have been frozen in the last week, for millions work commitments have been put on hold.

"The extremely high demand for breakdown support highlights the risks faced by motorists who take to the roads in severe and icy conditions, and due to the treacherous travelling conditions across the UK, over 3.8 million people have missed at least a full day of work in the last week alone, while over 590,000 people missed at least two days of work in the last week, according to figures."
