Yesterday 71% of attendees of Network Rail's Annual General Meeting voted in favour of executive bonuses, which could see some senior staff have their salaries topped up by as much as £300,000.
Outside the meeting, members of the TSSA protested by handing out leaflets claiming that while senior Network Rail staff received bonuses, Britain had been left with "the most expensive and overcrowded network in Europe". An actor was also employed to dress as the ‘fat controller' from the children's television series Thomas the Tank Engine.
Union general secretary Gerry Doherty said: "I am disappointed that NR has ignored the court of public opinion and passengers' anger.
"Like the Fat Controller, they seem to set fictional targets which they always manage somehow to achieve every year. It is high time Ministers stepped in to cancel this particular gravy train."
