Kent County Council offers its female managers a route to the top with leadership skills training initiative

Kent County Council will deliver a five-day leadership programme to female managers to encourage more women into top jobs within the organisation.

The council will work with a leadership development firm to make the scheme available to 12 female managers this month.

The women, who come from disciplines such as adult services and children and families, were selected because they showed leadership potential. It is hoped the training will provide them with the skills to be leaders, foster confidence in their abilities and encourage career and personal development.

Peggy Lawlor, programme director and head of management and development at Kent County Council, said: "There is a perception women may be reluctant to apply for roles with a strategic responsibility because they lack confidence, or they make personal choices not to progress based on work demands and the impact that may have on personal life.

"We will use this opportunity to help them draw clearly defined action plans [for progression]. Our hope is more women will apply for senior roles and be successful as a result of the programme."
