HMRC shows charitable payroll giving donations increase by £4 million over the last year

HMRC figures published this week reveal the funds being donated to charity directly from employee pay through payroll giving schemes, has risen by 3.5% in the last year despite the difficult economic conditions.

HMRC found donations are up £4 million for the year 2011-12 and the average monthly donation from pay has risen from £13.19 to £13.38 per month.

Peter O'Hara, MD of Workplace Giving UK, which launched the Geared for Giving Campaign in 2008, said "We are really pleased to hear that charitable donations made straight from pay continue to grow.

"We launched the Geared for Giving Campaign with Duncan Bannatyne out of sheer frustration having seen Government money allocated to encouraging more employers to offer and promote the scheme to their workforce squandered because of a lack of creativity and communications aimed at the wrong audience.

"We know that people are really generous and have good intentions, we want to ensure that employees have a simple and effective way to turn those good intentions into fantastic actions by making donating to charity as simple and efficient as possible, what could be easier than donating straight from your pay?

"There are still many misunderstandings around how to successfully run a Workplace Giving scheme and it cannot be denied that there are still some administrative changes which need to be made to bring giving from pay in to the 21st century.

"We hope that these figures will send out a clear message to those who can make these changes, there is obviously an appetite for donating in this simple way, all we now need is not to squander the opportunity to make the tweaks and changes necessary to make it even easier."
