Exclusive: Health Store cuts staff absence by scanning fingerprints

The Health Store has reduced its absence levels from 7% to 2% by requiring staff to 'clock in' using a finger scanner.

The health food retailer implemented a human capital management system provided by COA Solutions whereby staff have to touch a reader when they arrive at work, which stores their attendance records.

The firm has also used evidence from the system in a disciplinary case to prove a member of staff, who was suspected of theft, was on site when the crime was committed, despite claiming not to have been in the building at the time.

Denise Bradley, HR manager for The Health Store, said: "Recording absence and carrying out back-to-work interviews has reduced our absence from 7% to 2%. Staff morale has also been boosted as employees know the clocking-in system enables them to be treated fairly and equally. For instance, poor attendance and lateness no longer go unnoticed, meaning hard-working employees are justifiably recognised and that makes for a happy and productive workplace."
