Murley studied Botany and Zoology at Durham University and, following a PGCE at Cambridge University, began her working career as a teacher. She then switched professions to qualify as a chartered surveyor and went on to complete an MBA at Cranfield University.

From there Murley moved into management consultancy, working with companies from the private, public and third sector in a variety of international locations. This included directorships at BAA, the University of Cambridge, Prudential and Hay Group.

Most recently, as global HR director for the British Council, Murley led its international network of HR professionals, based in 110+ countries, to develop new, more effective and efficient operating models, support new ways of working and raise levels of leadership and management capability. Prior to joining the British Council Murley ran her own independent consultancy, specialising in HR and sustainability development. Her clients included the University of Cambridge, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Balfour Beatty Construction, Prudential UK and Post Office.
