Hutton was speaking to HR magazine alongside Patrick Wright, the chair of the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, at the 2013 HR Most Influential Awards.
He said the "best people" in HR get this, but the challenge lies in "persuading boards to take this agenda seriously".
"You can't turn any company inside out so that it faces external influence and internalise it without people who really own the mission, values and purpose of that company," Hutton said.
"If you're a CEO, you're driving a company forward you buy that. Next question: who's going to do it, how are you going to get your staff to do this, how are they going to own, and build trust relationships with people in the supply chain, unless themselves earn a sense of purpose and values of that company?"
