Top HR career tip: understand where HR sits in the business

HR thought leaders including Neil Morrison and Jeremy Campbell discuss HR's role on the board

Wondering how to reach the next stage of your career? According to the speakers at our HR Future Leaders Forum one crucial aspect is understanding the whole business, not just HR.

Jeremy Campbell, chief people officer of Ceridian, warned that HR does not do enough to develop its understanding of other functions. "For me the most important thing we can do as HR professionals is understand the business," he said. "[We should] really find out how the business works."

Michael Moran, chief executive of 10Eighty, agreed that HR should spend time out in the business. "Get close to the line and understand what is driving that business," he said. "You then as an HR professional can add real value."

Neil Morrison, group HR director for Penguin Random House UK and international, said that there is a real opportunity for HR to contribute commercially to the organisation. "We can only do that if we're building not only our current capability, but also our future capability," he said.

Kirsty Gill, VP OE and reward for ARM, said that culture is important. "Something I am really passionate about is creating great cultures in the workplace," she said. "I've had lots of questions about developing a culture that supports the business strategy."
