The research, by recruitment agency hirescores.com, found two-thirds of employees would ruin their colleagues' chances of advancement because they believe their co-workers would do the same to them if the situation were reversed.
Workers in York said they had the best working relationships, with 74% saying they got on with the people that they worked with. Londoners had the worst working relationships with just a 12% saying that they got on with their co-workers.
Slough - the home of dysfunctional workplace The Office - was found to be the ‘least friendly' place to work, followed by London, Brighton and Birmingham.
A third said they had fallen out with a work colleague they considered a ‘friend' over a work issue, with half of these admitting it was due to promotion jealousy.
