Tata firm rolls out six-step global leadership plan

Tata Communications is launching a 'leadership signature programme' to review performance of its top 750 leaders.

In order to improve its HR practices, global comms provider Tata Communications is rolling out its leadership signature programme (LSP) for 750 senior managers worldwide.

Aadesh Goyal (pictured) global head of HR at Tata Communications, told HR magazine: "In our company, achieving goals is important, but it's how you issue these which is more important for leaders, and that's where the LSP comes in.

"There are six steps on the LSP: the first is the ability to energise, second is assuming responsibility, third is the ability to turn diversity into synergy, fourth is to think and act with a focus on profit, fifth is people-centricity with a focus on customers. Sixth is how managers transfer ideas into reality.

"This practice is important because it is part of our performance review process and we measure an employee's future potential by looking at how good they are on the LSP," Goyal said.

Tata has also looked at what HR practices can be used to measure and improve employee engagement throughout its business. A performance review process that has been brought in in the past two months allows the comments that have been written by the first and second line manager on the employer's performance to be shared with the employee when they have the sit-down discussion part of the assessment.

Goyal commented: "What this new review system does is bring about a lot more transparency and consistency, which I personally feel will help with employee engagement."

Another HR practice Tata believes can help to improve its employee engagement is to look at how senior managers deal with specific employee issues.

Goyal reveals how Tata is starting to come up with ideas that are different from the usual processes. He said: "Two weeks ago, we held a session where 30 of our middle managers got together and, through a "speed-dating"-style meeting, they were able to trade ideas and opinions of each other.

"It is unique meetings such as this that help us keep going up the engagement curve."
