Retail workers gain biggest salary rise with experience

By industry, arts, entertainment and recreation promised the biggest pay rise after eight years

Workers in retail see the biggest salary increase as they become more experienced, according to research from Glassdoor.

The report analysed 18,125 UK salaries to discover which jobs boast the best pay increases, comparing salaries at entry level (zero to three years' experience) to that of an experienced employee in the same role (eight years' experience or more).

Retail representatives earned an average of £15,000 when they had up to three years of experience, but their salary rose to an average of £52,000 after eight years, an increase of 247%.

Other jobs with a large jump included a database engineer, which rose by 231%; a game artist, which rose by 214%; and an account executive, who could expect to earn 171% more than when they started.

When it came to industries as a whole, arts, entertainment and recreation promised the biggest rise after eight years, growing from £15,500 to £34,370. Those working in finance could see significant jumps too, with an average salary of £73,040 after just eight years. The wider retail industry just missed out as a top 10 sector (at number 12), with an average increase of 57%.

Mark Di-Toro, Glassdoor's careers expert, told HR magazine that HR directors should be aware of the data at their employees' fingertips. "You'd struggle to find anyone in your organisation who didn't want to know if they were being paid fairly or at market rate,” he said. “Senior HR figures across the UK can now use salary data on Glassdoor to compare and benchmark their company remuneration levels for specific jobs or sectors.

“This data is readily available for your employees too, so the power is now shared in terms of negotiating the best deal on both sides. Understanding how pay can increase over time also allows employees and companies alike to map out their budgets and realise future earning potential.”
