Recruitment of HR professionals increases by up to a quarter in local authorities

There has been a 20-25% quarter-on-quarter increase in the recruitment of HR professionals in local authorities despite redundancies elsewhere, according to a recruitment consultancy.

Badenock and Clark indentified the trend in their report on the recruitment market, Professional talent spotlight, released this week.

Speaking to HR, assistant director, Sarah Wynn, said: "Local authorities need experts in house. They need to make sure that knowledge stays within the council for as long as possible so that people are treated fairly in this time of change."

Wynn emphasised that the increase was more pronounced because of an extreme "low point" last year, and that many of the vacancies were replacements or maternity cover, whereas in other council departments such roles were being absorbed by other employees.

"Increases are very much around the generalist and business partner kind of roles. But it’s not about just increasing the headcount though; it’s about making sure the jobs that people do are fulfilled."
