The PM, together with Chancellor Alistair Darling, Skills Secretary John Denham and Business Secretary John Hutton, officially launched Government's strategy on manufacturing, at Jaguar Land Rover's Castle Bromwich facility in the West Midlands yesterday.
Brown said £24 million would be injected into manufacturing and production research. He also confirmed a strategy paper would be delivered next year aimed at helping UK companies adapt to a low-carbon economy.
The PM and chancellor met 54 apprentices who started their careers with Jaguar Land Rover last week.
David Smith, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said: "Manufacturing can only grow and prosper if we attract sufficient numbers of suitably skilled people into the sector." He added: "We especially welcome the proposal to promote manufacturing in schools. Access to training funds to attract, retain and develop the right people in our industry is critical."
Manufacturing apprenticeships to increase
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to support the creation of an extra 1,500 apprenticeships on top of the 9,000 places already announced to come on-stream in the next three years.
