Employers step up their road risk management

Fleet decision-makers are finally getting to grips with the demands of occupational road risk management, finds a new survey by Kwik-Fit Fleet.

Of 97 fleets studied (comprising 250,000 company cars), 86% of them had risk policies in place.

Almost two thirds of employers (65%) offer on-the-road and office-based driver training for staff and more than two fifths (42%) give employees online driving assessments.

More than nine out of 10 employers have a policy covering mobile phones and driving and, of these, 54% banned mobile phone use in cars altogether.

The news comes as April's Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act  made employers responsible for employees' safety when driving a company car.

More than half said the legal implications of employees being involved in a crash had prompted them to implement work-driving policies while 29% said it was their moral obligation to do so. A further 14% pointed to the financial savings of vehicles being involved in fewer accidents.

Mark Wise, head of Kwik-Fit Fleet, said: "While the survey highlights that many fleets are actively taking steps to reduce their crash risk exposure there is no room for complacency. It is also important that all those companies that have implemented best practice work to enlighten those that have yet to act."
