BT to create 500 engineering roles

BT has today announced it intends to create 500 more engineering roles as part of its Openreach arm.

The new jobs will be mainly based in London, Surrey and Aberdeen. It takes the number of new positions created by the telecommunications company to 2,400 since April.

About 200 of the roles are expected to be filled by ex-service personnel, while 300 apprentices are included in the overall intake for the year.

Openreach CEO Joe Garner said the network provider is recruiting to "build our network rapidly".

"These new engineers will help ensure that Openreach continues to meet and exceed the rising demands of our customers in an internet age," he said.

Openreach has worked closely with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) on its job creation programme. CWU deputy general-secretary Andy Kerr welcomed the news that 500 "direct labour jobs" are being created.

"We especially welcome the opportunities given to women to become engineers and to 300 young people through the apprentice scheme,” he said.
