Autumn Statement: Government still considering merging income tax and national insurance contributions

Speaking this afternoon chancellor George Osborne said the Government was still consulting on the merging of administration of national insurance and income tax administration.

He said: "We’re undertaking major simplification of the tax code for businesses and individuals, including this autumn consulting on ideas to merge the administration of income tax and national insurance."

Commenting, Richard Manion, national tax director at Smith & Williamson, said: "this is a no-brainer and the Government should do it, but i think it'll be a long-burn project and we won't see it until after two parliaments.

Carol Dempsey, partner at PwC added: "This is a great idea, but it's going to be a huge job. Income tax and national insurance have grown up seperately, so it'll be a long-term aspiration to merge them."
