Sectors she has worked in include insurance, automotive, transportation, retail, health, financial services, FMCG and the public sector. Steel founded her own consultancy in 2015, offering her expertise in organisation design; HR transformation; turnarounds; joint ventures; growth; and large, complex, matrix-managed organisations.

Previous ‘gigs’ include interim transformation director at Solus Accident Repair Centres, where she led the restructuring of the HR function to enable the move from a transactional to a value-add service. Here she also led the hire of three senior roles to boost the capability at a senior level in preparation for the growth strategy.

Other notable positions include people director at the Cabinet Office, including Number 10 Downing Street. Here Steel was accountable for more than 1,700 employees and successfully implemented a new performance management system and senior leadership development programme, while maintaining effective relationships with unions through a period of unprecedented change and austerity.

Other previous roles include global systems change and transformation programme at Unilever; people director, IT group for the Department for Work and Pensions; people director to group corporate centre at the RSA; interim people change director at Boots; and interim people director at Arriva Rail London.

Steel is also a non -executive director at the British Retail Consortium, and a regular commentator on social media and contributor to HR magazine.
