Travelodge extends apprenticeship scheme for managers

Travelodge, the budget hotel chain is to recruit 40 apprentices to join its junior Management Programme titled (JuMP) this spring.

JuMP is a fast track route into management and provides A -level students (18+) with a real alternative to going to university. On this programme school leavers can continue their education, obtain work experience, receive a salary and become a manager by the age of 21.

The scheme was launched in April 2011. It was developed to support Travelodge's aggressive growth strategy to have 1,100 hotels by 2025. In addition, to supporting the Chancellor's appeal for British companies to generate more high value apprenticeship placements, in a bid to help the one million out of work youngsters into the workplace.

These 40 apprenticeships are part of Travelodge's commitment to recruit 120 Apprentices t his year.

The hotel chain kick started its apprenticeship recruitment drive in January this year and received more than 3,000's CV's for its 45 apprentice positions - which equated to 66 school leavers fighting for each position.

Michelle Luxford, Travelodge HRD said: "Our JuMP programme has got off to a fantastic start. We have been over whelmed by the response we have received for the scheme since it launched in April 2011. I anticipate demand is going to be very high again for our current 40 places, especially with the end of school term fast approaching."

"The option to go to University is not a given like it used to be. In today's economy, many school leavers cannot afford to go into further education and it's no surprise that there is a nine per cent drop in University applications this year. With over a million 16 -24 year olds unemployed, more companies have to invest into apprenticeship programmes to help these youngsters into the workplace. There is a huge pool of talent out there searching for an opportunity to start a career."

On the Travelodge JuMP scheme, apprentices will experience practical and vocational learning in hotel management. Apprentices will attain a L2 Apprenticeship in Multi Skilled Hospitality and a L3 Diploma (Advanced Apprenticeship) in hospitality Supervision & Leadership. Upon completing the apprenticeship programme apprentices will undertake the Travelodge in house 12-week management development programme and then graduate to a management role.

Luxford added: "The Prime Minister has earmarked UK tourism as one of the six strategic industries to drive economy recovery. The budget hotel sector is the engine room of the hotel industry and Travelodge is the power brand of the UK hotel sector. Therefore the potential for today's youth to revolutionise one of Britain's powerhouse industries is phenomenal. I am hoping we will find our future business leaders from JuMP"

A JuMP apprentice is expected to earn in total between, £25,000 to £30,000 from training to graduation which is within a three year period. This is the same length of time a student can spend studying for a degree at University.
