In the past HR has had an unfortunate reputation as the ‘fun police’ – a function concerned only with compliance and box-ticking. Luckily that has (mostly) changed, and more HRDs are willing to take a risk and try new things.
Another positive step includes using data and analytics to back up people policy. Here at HR magazine we get more than our fair share of press releases about research, polls and whitepapers… But some are a lot more thorough than others.

- The world’s oldest known expenses claim was made by explorer Captain Cook.
- Nearly a third of the UK’s office workers find their co-workers’ moaning to be one of the biggest annoyances in the workplace.
- 47% of females refuse to poo at work.
- One in three parents don’t have a clue what their children actually do for a living.
- The ‘Idiots on Ladders’ competition encourages people to share photos of others using ladders in an unsafe way.
- Jobseekers said access to good quality tea or coffee at work outweighed other employee benefits such as subsidised gym memberships and childcare vouchers.
- Half of British workers would walk out of their dream job in exchange for a free round the world trip.
- 2.3% of jobseekers have witnessed an interviewer pass wind during the interview.
- 2.16pm is the most common time for workers to feel tired and find it hard to concentrate. This is known as the ‘office slump’.
- There is a television channel specifically for people who work in sales.
