PricewaterhouseCoopers offers programme to develop employability of first-year students

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has launched an academy for first-year university students to develop the employability skills of future graduates.

The five-day business programme, which was devised by PwC's in-house HR team, will consist of personal and professional development programmes as well as group activities where participants will pose as board members of a fictitious international transport business.

As the teams face the harsh realities of the business world, it is hoped the students will learn how to deal with issues like rising oil prices and trade union negotiations.

During the week, students will be formally assessed, culminating with group presentations and a Dragons' Den style interview. Successful participants will be awarded a place on the firm's paid summer internship scheme in 2010.

Sonia Stockton, head of recruitment at PwC, said: "Until now, first year at university for many students is often a lost year, in terms of opportunities to gain real life business experience or develop their employability skills. Students either take the summer off, or can't access opportunities for internships until second and third-year breaks. This programme is designed to get their employability skills on track as early as possible."
