Pontins to create new jobs as booking surge by 25%

Holiday bookings at Pontins are up 25%, strengthening the firm's commitment to create 2,000 new jobs over the next three years.

The company, which employs 1,500 staff at six UK locations, is experiencing a rise in bookings as Britons struggling in the recession opt to stay in the UK rather than go abroad for summer holidays.

Earlier this year, Pontins committed to spending £50 million on refurbishing its resorts and taking on 2,000 new blue coats.

Ian Smith, chief executive of Pontins, said: "Since acquiring this business just over a year or so ago, we have seen an astonishing turnaround not only in sales and bookings but also staff retention levels. Importantly, our development plans have drawn considerable positive reactions from guests, customers, suppliers, local businesses, local MPs, local authorities and local councillors alike.

"Our £50 million redevelopment plans are continuing in line with the board's expectations and planning applications are being progressed. But like most businesses in a tough market place, although we are doing incredibly well and will continue to do so, we need to continue to grow and develop the business and this cannot be done by organic means alone.

"We are looking at strategic opportunities to acquire businesses that fit with our core product and will add value for money. With this in mind I can confirm the board is currently in discussion regarding the appointment of a firm of City financial advisers with a view to exploring strategic acquisition opportunities."
