One thousand jobs at risk in Luton as General Motors ponders Vauxhall's future

Up to 1,000 jobs are at risk at Vauxhall Motors' plant in Luton, according to reports this morning.

The Independent reported today that Nick Reilly, the European boss of General Motors – which owns Vauxhall – expected a decision on job losses within the next eight weeks.

However, speaking to HR, GM UK brands boss Bill Parfitt, chairman and CEO of Vauxhall and Chevrolet in the UK and Opel Ireland, said that no decision was imminent.

"This is a complex situation and we are analysing all the issues involved," Parfitt said. "We don’t expect any news in the short term."

Vauxhall yesterday announced a multi-million pound, three-and-a-half-year sponsorship deal with the England football team, with the BBC suggesting that the company may push for a reinstitution of the British Home Championships between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for the first time since 1984.
