Npower to cut 1,460 UK jobs

Energy giant Npower has confirmed it is cutting 1,460 UK jobs in a major restructure.

The company, one the UK’s ‘big six’ energy suppliers, announced it would be outsourcing more work to Capita and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

According to the plans, Capita will run UK-based call centres, while back-office functions will be outsourced to India. About 540 of Npower’s staff will transfer to Capita under TUPE rules.

CEO Paul Massara said the restructure was necessary for the company “to deliver the levels of service our customers deserve”.

“I understand that these changes would be incredibly hard for some of our employees and we’ll be doing everything we can to support them over the next few months,” he added.

The redundancies will take place over the next eight months, affecting a number of sites. The company will close offices in Stock on Trent, Oldbury and Thornaby.
