Grant Thornton tops internship list

Professional services firm Grant Thornton has been named as the top employer for internships and placements by student review site RateMyPlacement.com.

The fourth annual Top 75 Placement and Internship Employers ranking saw Grant Thornton move up one place to take top spot, with student reviews averaging 8.66 out of 10.

The list was compiled using 6,000 student-written reviews in 2012-13, documenting real-life undergraduate experiences at many of the UK's most high-profile employers.

Students are asked to rate their placement by answering 16 questions, which included: To what extent did you enjoy your placement? What were the perks of your placement? Were there opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

These were then collated to give each company an overall score.

Microsoft climbed 16 places into second place and professional services firms BDO and PWC make up the top four.

Richard Waite, resourcing brand senior officer at Grant Thornton, said: "For a scheme to work it has to be mutually beneficial, which is why we focus so hard on giving early responsibility, making [the intern] feel valued, presenting the firm in the best light, and offering valuable skills for them to take forward."
