Firms understand the need for work anywhere anytime culture, but have yet to deploy technology to support it, says research

Businesses understand the importance of flexible working but aren't supporting this with technology, according to research published today by IT provider Computacenter.

The research claims there is a gap between the flexibility wanted by employees and the delivery of IT.

It highlighted that while 75% of UK workers would like more extensive technology in the workplace, most want the ability to work anywhere, with remote access to business applications and email predicted by Computacenter to be the fastest growing technologies in the next 12-24 months.

The research claims that while IT departments have the ability of implementing products to support remote working, they are not meeting the expectations of employees who want the 'work anywhere, anytime' culture.

Pierre Hall, solutions director at Computacenter, said: "We have the technology at our fingertips to work a full day out of the office or outside the traditional 9-5. However in many cases the technology team is not supporting this working style effectively.

Hall added: "The flexible workforce can be as productive, if not more, than the office-based teams, but only if they have the technology to empower them.

"If these workers are not supported, the company runs the risk of losing productivity."

Barry Hoffman, group HR director at Computacenter, said: "This research confirms the need for back-end systems which can support location and time-neutral working patterns."

The online research of 1,000 UK employees and 200 IT decision makers was conducted in October 2012 by Computacenter
