Europe's first 'Olympic-style' games launches graduate programme

The 2015 Baku European Games, Europe's first Olympics-style sporting event, has launched a global recruitment programme for around 200 graduates.

The "graduate excellence" scheme will have four stages of intakes before the games in April 2015, according to chief operation officer Simon Clegg.

Clegg told HR magazine interest in the graduate places has been high, both in Azerbaijan, where the games are being held, and across the globe.

"The first intake is only 45 places but we've had around 1,000 applications," he said. "The calibre of applicants is exceptional. Interest in understandably mainly focused in Europe, including the UK, but we've had people from as far as Australia looking to join."

Clegg, who was instrumental in bringing the Olympics to London as CEO of the British Olympic Committee, said he hoped the Baku Games can boost employment in the host country.

"A fair few of the graduates are Azerbaijani so we're looking to leave a great learning and development legacy," he said. "It's a very young country – only 22-years-old – so while some of the employment practices aren't embedded yet it's an exciting opportunity to make a difference."

Recruiting 1,000 full-time staff and around 10,000 volunteers by April 2015 has been a "huge undertaking", according to Clegg.

"We've needed solid HR structures to make it work as it's a very large-scale operation," he said. "Around half of the people involved have had experience of organising a games before. For the others it's a great chance to learn new skills."
