Employees value flexible working conditions above pay

Almost three quarters of UK employees say they work more productively at home than in an office, research suggests.

A survey of more than 5,000 workers in the UK, Europe, Middle East and US also found 45% believe they work most efficiently before 9am or after 6pm.

The study by mobile provider Aruba Networks revealed changing attitudes among employees world-wide, with many admitting to valuing new technologies above higher salaries.

More than half (53%) said they would rather work from home two to three days a week than receive a 10% higher salary.

Almost a third (32%) said they would prefer to receive a smartphone from their employer rather than a 5% higher salary.

Chief marketing officer at Aruba Networks Ben Gibson advised employers to redefine work environments in line with the changing priorities of what he termed “#GenMobile”.

“We’ve seen flexible working, bring your own device and always-on connectivity growing for some time, but this report shows that it’s now become a way of life for those in the modern workforce,” Gibson said.

“What this report suggests is that #GenMobile won’t have patience with companies who do not accommodate their mobile lives. In order to attract and keep the best employees, businesses need to start looking for solutions to ensure levels of empowerment and productivity in this emerging working world. Ultimately, many will have to totally redefine traditional work environments.”

The survey also revealed 38% of employees would rather be able to bring their own device to work than have an office with a window. A further 53% would rather their company paid for a mobile device than provide lunch. Respondents who expressed these views were typically aged between 18 and 35-years-old.
