Changes to laws on visas are forcing thousands of Australians to return home

Thousands of Australians working in the UK are set to head back down under this year due to changes to the laws allowing them to have a migrant visa, as well as the worsening economic climate.

Track Me Back, an online employment firm specialising in helping people from Australia and New Zealand find employment back home, reports more than 1,000 registrations in recent months from Aussies hoping to move back to Australia.

In the past 10 years, thousands of Antipodeans have moved to the UK, lured by higher wages and the opportunity to travel, but new visa laws that came into effect on 1 April mean people from outside the European Union working in the UK must have a masters degree and earn at least £20,000 in order to qualify for a Highly Skilled Migrant Visa.

Caroline Rafferty, general manager of Track Me Back, said: "The new laws are definitely forcing Aussies to weigh up their future and for many it means returning home sooner than expected."

Rafferty claims a high proportion of City bankers do not have a masters degree. But in Australia staff hoping to work in the health sector are often snapped up within days of their return to Oz.
