Cardiff leads the way in vocational learning

Cardiff has been named as Britains vocational learning hot spot, according to a study from City & Guilds.

Over the past 10 years the number of people enrolling in courses increased threefold. Nearly 34,000 qualifications were awarded in 2006-2007 in the Welsh capital.

City & Guilds tracked the uptake of its most popular vocational courses in the UK over the past 10 years. Results also show geographical patterns emerging in the kind of skills people are learning. In Sheffield, for example, electrical courses topped the table, with 17% of learners qualifying in them. People from Bristol favoured healthcare while IT came top in Nottingham, with 20% of total qualifications gained.

Its exciting to discover so many people catching the learning bug, says acting director general of City & Guilds, Keith Brooker. Cardiff is clearly leading the way. It will be interesting to see whether these trends continue. If so, we could witness the rise of these cities as specialist beacons of learning in future years.
