BBC's Mark Thompson announces pay freeze for managers

Senior BBC management will not be receiving pay rises or bonuses until 2010, announced director-general Mark Thompson.

it was announced this morning, as part of a money saving initiative, the broadcasting company will freeze the salaries of 400 managers, and lower grade staff will have pay reviews but will not be eligible for bonuses.

The BBC hopes the pay freeze will save £20 million over the next 18 months.

In an email to affected managers, Thompson said: "I recognise this is a tough message. However we beleiveit is the right position for the BBC to take in these difficult times.

"We need to be in as strong a position as possible if we are to deliver distinctive content and meet our key strategic projects.

"I hope you appreciate why we believe in the current climate this is the right position for the BBC."

He concluded: "I know from the quality of our output every single day - despite the challenges we face - you share my determination to deliver distinctive and innovative programmes and content. I hope you understand why we have made these decisions regarding pay and bonuses for this year."
