Asda to recruit 5,000 extra staff and offers employees 750,000 overtime hours in run-up to Christmas

Asda has launched a drive to recruit an additional 5,000 seasonal staff to work during the Christmas period.

The roles, which will include opportunities across the shop floor and home delivery, are part of a £5 million investment in customer service this festive season - providing further evidence of its commitment to delivering for consumers during tough times.

Asda has already hired close to 2,000 festive temps from across the country.

Roles still available include specialist service hosts, who will provide a helping hand tracking down last minute gifts, and dedicated advisers who will provide guidance on 'hot' gifts such as the latest gadgets and clothing trends.

As well as additional roles in store, Asda is also offering 750,000 hours overtime to existing staff.

Asda's latest income tracker showed that families have on average £15 less disposable income each week compared to this time last year. Recent research from the retailer shows that Christmas is one of the top four pressures on shopper's budgets - after utilities fuel and food.

Andy Clarke, Asda CEO and president said: "Our customers love Christmas - and they want everything to be just right - that's why we're bringing in 7,000 extra pairs of hands to make sure it goes without a hitch. We are hoping that this will not only provide extra help to our customers when they need it most, but also much needed job opportunities in our local communities. "

Whilst the majority of roles will be fixed term contracts, colleagues may be invited to join a 'register of talent' and invited to take on temporary positions during other busy periods.
