Asda George sets up ‘learn and earn’ initiative

George, Asda's clothing brand, has launched a fully-funded 'learn while you earn' university programme, aimed specifically at school and college students.

The scheme will offer four successful college-leavers the opportunity to study for a foundation degree in retail at Manchester Metropolitan University, while taking up salaried positions at George's head office in Leicester.

George is launching this programme at a time when ongoing concerns around rising tuition fees, mounting student debt and tighter family budgets mean a growing number of students will be reconsidering the affordability of gaining further qualifications.

The scheme, which begins in August 2011, with applications open now, builds on George's commitment to youth employment, which has included the introduction of an award-winning student placement programme for university undergraduates and a work experience scheme for students over the age of 16.

George hopes to identify and develop the future leaders of its business as early as possible.

George's sponsorship of the Graduate Fashion Show also strengthens the retailer's commitment to strengthening the whole business of fashion - and not just the design side of the industry.

Caroline Massingham, people director at Asda, said: "The tough economy this year has led to rising youth unemployment, fewer university places and to increased costs of funding for university courses. I am proud and very excited that the George clothing business is working harder than ever to support Britain's youth, at a time when many employers are cutting back or reducing graduate schemes.

"This provides the much-needed platform for the one in five students who will not make it to university and offers the opportunity to gain work experience, earn a regular income and at the same time gain a university qualification. This represents a significant step-change in the market, is leading-edge in its thinking and will provide sponsorship to ensure young people are prepared for future job roles"

Steve Bainbridge, director of the Retail Enterprise Network at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: "This is an exciting initiative that is helping to push the boundaries of UK graduate education. We look forward to working with George to help nurture and develop the next generation of retail talent."

The two-year foundation degree will involve 28 hours of learning each week, split between work-based assessment, peer networking and reflection, and online study.

Successful candidates will supplement their learning with a 12-month rotation through various George departments at its HQ. At the end of this two-year course, candidates will get the opportunity to 'top up' their foundation degree and continue on to a full BA Hons qualification as they continue their career at George.

Applications for the programme are open to all postA-level students possessing 240 UCAS points or an equivalent level 3 qualification.
