Melanie Steel, founder of HR consultancy People Change Expertise, said the respect the HR profession received through their handling of coronavirus has made the job more satisfying.

She told HR magazine: "During the pandemic, the HR function as a whole has been instrumental in supporting both managers and colleagues not just with the usual HR activities but also on a more personalised way like never before, be it regarding wellbeing, or managing different ways of working.

"I think managers and colleagues have shown their gratitude to their HR team members and therefore that makes a challenging role, equally satisfying, when you are able to make a difference."

HR professional's job confidence is also on a high following the pandemic, as a majority in March this year said they felt positively about their prospects over the next five years.

Speaking to HR magazine Chris Rowlands, director at recruitment agency Executive Network Group, added: "There's little doubt that HR’s stock has risen over the past two years.

"It will continue to do so as companies work through the paradigm shift of employee’s relationships with their employers.

"It’s a great employment market for great people."
