Smith has more than 28 years’ experience in the not-for-profit sector having led HR transformations, organisational and business change for staff and volunteers working for United Response, The National Trust and both the University College and Royal Free Hospitals.
As executive director of people and organisational development at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), Smith leads a multi-award -winning team responsible for all people matters for the BHF’s 4,500 employees and 20,000 volunteers. With a clear remit to lead cultural and business change Smith supports the BHF with its ambition to deliver a world-class organisation. Recently awarded Top Rated Workplace by Indeed, Smith has led significant organisational and digital transformation with initiatives such as implementation of Workday HR and payroll, learning and performance, smarter working and being a leading organisation on health and wellbeing programmes.
As a fellow of the CIPD Smith is a judge for the prestigious CIPD Awards and HR Excellence Awards. She was added to HR’s Most Influential Practitioners list in 2018 and shortlisted for HRD of the Year at the 2019 HR Excellence Awards. BHF won three HR Excellence Awards in 2019 for Best use of internal communications, Best talent management strategy and the People-focused workplace design award.
She is a trustee of the Charities HR Network and is a regular speaker on topics including the people experience, employee wellbeing, transformational and digital change.
