Jo MacPhail, HR director, CrossCountry Trains

?Jo MacPhail joined CrossCountry trains in December 2016 as HR director

She is responsible for a workforce of 1,850 employees across the UK employed in one of the long-distance train operator companies (TOC) in the UK.

At CrossCountry she has championed a customer-focused HR department while building on a positive and progressive employee engagement culture. Her work at CrossCountry has been focused on three main areas: improve wherever possible, put the customer (whomever that may be) at the heart of what the organisation does, and help develop people's careers as far as possible. Two of her key achievements at CrossCountry have been the implementation of a shared service model for all first-stage employee queries, which has dramatically improved the employee experience of HR and a complete overhaul of all learning and development activities throughout the business, from e-learning through to senior manager leadership development.

MacPhail joined CrossCountry Trains from idverde UK, where she was HR director. idverde UK is private equity-backed and delivers grounds maintenance services for a range of private and public sector clients, including Regents Park and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. She was HR director when The Landscape Group was acquired by its French parent company, was subsequently appointed as HR director for the new group, and played an intrinsic part in the cultural change programme that followed.

Prior to this MacPhail held a variety of roles including at BT, Openreach, Rolls-Royce and DHL. She has worked in generalist and ER/IR-focused roles in varying locations across the UK, with the majority of roles having a national remit.

She is a chartered fellow of the CIPD and obtained a masters in HR in 2016, specialising in change management.
