Up Front: Spotlight on... Health - City Living programme

Tofu smoothies may soon replace cappuccinos in UK workplaces. That's if Mitie Catering Services has anything to do with it. It recommends the energy-giving drinks as part of its City Living programme. Statisticians at CIPD say that ill-health in the workplace costs the UK economy 659 per employee per year. But Mitie believes this could be reduced if firms encourage healthier lifestyles among staff.

The City Living programme allows companies, through a Mitie canteen, tooffer nutritional food that suits the needs of their workforce. Eachemployee fills out a lifestyle questionnaire, and the data tells Mitieif there are any patterns of ill-health within that particularorganisation. Then certain foods are recommended to staff in their Mitiework canteen. Individuals can even have one-on-one access to health andnutrition consultants. On the City Living Active scheme, personaltrainers devise exercise plans too. And at the premium end of the marketis the Executive package, to take care of stressed-out CEOs.

"Bad nutrition affects memory, energy levels and stress," says AnthonyBennett, managing director of Mitie Catering Services. "Graduate levelworkers are becoming more concerned with a company's stance onwellbeing, and organisations are starting to wake up to it."
